A Joint Initiative for Higher Education
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), India, and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, have jointly started double master’s degree programmes (hereafter referred to as AIT-IITGN Double Degree Programme) from Academic Year 2025-26, with the first batch of students joining in August 2025. The salient feature of the programme includes a credit transfer framework and the award of degrees by both the institutes.
IIT Gandhinagar was founded in 2008 and is located in Palaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on the banks of the river Sabarmati. IITGN is rated India’s first 5-star GRIHA LD (Green) campus for minimizing the negative impact on the environment. The campus has been declared India’s first 5-star campus for ensuring food safety and promoting healthy eating.
The institute promotes critical thinking and an appreciation of the interdisciplinary character of knowledge, with an emphasis on the liberal arts, project-oriented learning, compulsory courses in design and the life sciences, diversity, and globalization.
The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an international institution, focusing on engineering, environment, and management studies. AIT’s rigorous academic, research, and experiential outreach programs prepare graduates for professional success and leadership roles in Asia and beyond.
It was founded in 1959 and offers the opportunity to study at an institution in Asia that possesses a global reputation. Sitting on a beautiful green campus located just north of Bangkok, Thailand, AIT operates as a multicultural community where a cosmopolitan approach to living and learning is the rule. You will meet and study with people from all around the world.

The credits earned at one Institute shall be shared with the partner Institute based on the following scaling factor:
The total credit requirements for the programme are 48 credits at AIT and 80 credits at IITGN, which will be calculated based on the credit-sharing formula above. While the program offers a lot of flexibility in terms of choosing courses, admitted students will be assigned a faculty adviser to assist them in course selection.
Students in the AIT-IITGN double Master's programme with IITGN as the admitting Institute may exit the programme and opt for a change of programme to the Postgraduate Diploma of the Institute (PGDIIT). The credits required to be completed for the award of PGDIIT will be 32 credits (IITGN), which include credits earned at IITGN and credits transferred to IITGN by AIT.
On successful completion of the requirements of the programme, students will be awarded a Master of Technology (MTech) degree by IITGN and a Master’s degree (Master of Engineering or Master of Science, depending on the specialization) by AIT.
IITGN’s MTech degree (including the double degree with AIT) is approved by the Institute’s Senate and recognized by statute in India and across the world. Our MTech students have pursued employment in industry as well as higher education in India and several countries in North America, Europe, and other regions of the world.
Candidates interested in the AIT-IITGN double Master's programme and who meet the eligibility criteria can apply to the respective admission portals as follows:
Minimum of 55% marks/5.5 CGPA/CPI (on a 10-point scale) in Bachelor of Engineering (BE)/Bachelor of Technology (BTech)/4-year Bachelor of Science (BS)/Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent in appropriate branches. The minimum eligibility criteria for students from India admitted by IITGN, from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) will be 50% marks/5.0 CGPA/CPI (on a 10-point scale).
4-year Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.0 or equivalent and English proficiency score in IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/AIT-EET. Note that while IITGN does not require an English proficiency score, AIT does and therefore, all candidates must obtain a sufficient score even if their admitting Institute is IITGN. Indian nationals can take the AIT-EET (an online test) at any time before applying and must score at least 6.0 to be eligible.
Students can join their admitting Institute at the start of their programme. Students starting the programme at AIT will spend their two semesters at AIT and two semesters at IITGN. Similarly, students starting the programme at IITGN will spend two semesters at IITGN and two semesters at AIT.
The fee structure of the double Master's programme is designed to take into account the fact that candidates would spend two semesters at each Institute. However, to maintain registration at each Institute, candidates need to pay fees each semester at each Institute. Therefore, the two semesters of fees have been prorated to four semesters for each Institute. Thus, the fee structure of the programme is as follows:
